Consecutive interpretation is the most common form of interpretation. It is used in situations in which the interpreter and the persons for whom he or she is interpreting speak consecutively, each waiting until the other has finished speaking before they begin. In this scenario, for example, a Japanese speaker would say something and then pause while the interpreter interprets what they said to an English speaker. The English speaker would then respond and pause, while the interpreter relates the response to the Japanese speaker.
Simultaneous interpretation, on the other hand, is used in situations in which the interpreter and the person being interpreted speak simultaneously. Using headphones, microphones, and a sound proof booth the interpreter is able to interpret and listen at the same time. This form of interpretation is generally used in conferences or large group settings.
Not sure which type of interpretation you need? Contact us now and we’ll help you figure it out.
At Infinity we realize that an incorrect interpretation is worse than having no interpretation at all and that is why we carefully screen each applicant, hiring only the most qualified simultaneous interpreters with the appropriate level of education and experience, and the appropriate certification when applicable.
As mentioned above simultaneous interpretation requires more than just being able speak two languages. Good simultaneous interpreters (a.k.a. conference interpreters) need extensive training and have to continuously work to maintain their skills. All of our interpreters continually work at honing their skills and are constantly improving their knowledge of the terminology of the various subject matters in which they specialize.
